Shamit has been a student of Hindustani Classical music from last 25 years. He received his initial training from Shri Haridutt Sharma in Ghaziabad and then from Shri Mohinderjit Singh in Mumbai. He has also undergone training in Western Classical vocal from Mr. Hurchul Young from Delhi School of Music and has undergone voice training with Mr. Anant Vaidyanathan in Mumbai and Eric Arceneaux in Virginia, USA.
Shamit achieved fame as a finalist of Fame Gurukul, a music reality show on Sony TV in 2005 and from there has given more than 400 live performances as a soloist, both in India and abroad, has given voices to many Bollywood projects as well as has collaborated with many International musicians. Recently contributed in the creation of "Naari Shakti" that was played for the Republic day Parade, 2023.
He has also been writing his own songs and composing for himself and for many other projects.
Shamit Tyagi was invited by the "University of Cambridge" to give a masterclass on Indian Classical Music and Indian Contemporary Music.
The masterclass took place at St. Catherine's College in Cambridge on 21st of October, 2023. It was attended by Cambridge staff, Students and academics.
Shamit covered the history of Indian classical music and explained about the basic ingredients of Indian Classical Music, Raag Sangeet, Khayal gayan, alaap, taan, meendh and various other intricate details. He also covered the importance of "lyrics" that plays an integral role in the acceptability of classical music as it communicates the bhaav/feelings clearly and can help listeners to connect better.
Shamit covered that how in Indian Bollywood music many popular songs are raag based and are being appreciated by both music students and masses.
He also covered the importance of expressing freely both for the listener as well as for the performer giving various examples from his life to help his audience understand the importance of free spirit in order to enjoy anything in life.
Shamit emphasised highly on the importance of art and cultural exchange programmes as critical measures for peace building activities and to look at art from a grander perspective rather than just being treated as a tool for superficial entertainment.
The audience at the masterclass that comprised of music students as well researchers & staff were delighted and were captivated by the simple and convincing delivery of various aspects of music and how everyone can create an elevated experience by letting our hearts feel and express freely.
